Location: Houston, Texas USA
Status: Implemented
Duration: June 2018-May 2019
Project Description:
The Worldwide Education Fund (WEF) partnered with the Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees (PAIR) to launch a project aimed at engaging refugee youth in educational mentoring after-school programs. Through the integration of app-based literacy, numeracy, tutoring, and enrichment programs, the Global Learners initiative serves over 100 refugee students from three Houston Independent School District (HISD) middle schools with significant refugee populations.
Targeting schools like Las Americas Newcomer School, Jane Long Academy, and Revere Middle School, where students lack personal computers and individual access to laptops, the Global Learners program addressed the limited capacity to effectively use web-based educational software. The project incorporated 18 tablets, with six assigned to each program, facilitating tutoring, research, and computer literacy components.
During academic/tutoring time, English and math app-based tutoring programs were integrated into the program, allowing students to use tablets for homework that required internet access. The tablets were also equipped with learning apps to help students practice English and math skills during homework time. In the last quarter, 68% of students reported using the tablets for homework, math or English apps, or both, with 43% using them at least once a week at PAIR. This initiative underscores WEF’s commitment to bridging educational gaps and providing essential resources for refugee youth in Houston.
