Description and Impact:
The Worldwide Education Fund of The Dallas Foundation (WEF) collaborated with Edu-Girls, and Vimukti Sanstha to provide scholarships to deserving girls who want to pursue vocational training courses. The objective of this program was to make these girls financially independent. WEF has provided $ 10,000 to Edu-Girls for this vocational skill training project.
26 girls were provided with vocational training and transportation. Most of the students at Vimukti Sanstha were from minority communities and their average family income is less than Rs 8,350 ($ 121/-) monthly for an average family size of 5.
Vimukti Sanstha identified courses like Beautician, Nursery Teachers Training, Apparel Design, etc for this initiative. The girls were counseled, their aptitude assessed jointly by Vimukti and the training institute; the girls were then admitted and supported under these various programs. The organization will ensure that these girls are part of the workforce, making a steady income after completion of their respective courses.
VISION
The project envisioned to enable these girls to break the cycle of generational poverty by providing them with the basic skill sets. They can grow and flourish in these skills, which will also provide them a respectable source of income.
ABOUT EDU-GIRLS
Edu-GIRLS is a registered 501(c)3 that aims to develop a replicable system to educate, prepare and steer girls living in poverty so that they achieve financial independence. Edu-GIRLS mission is to deliver quality education to girls living in urban poverty. As urbanization accelerates, so does the number of slum dwellers. Underprivileged families in urban slums often keep girls at home, to do the chores while both parents are trying to earn a living. Edu-GIRLS is creating a system based on the Vimukti model launched in Jaipur, India in 2004. This model is uniquely responsive to the needs of girls living in urban poverty.
ABOUT VIMUKTI SANSTHA
Vimukti Sanstha, founded in 2004 a registered society, is an initiative to combat and overcome the discrimination against the girl child through literacy and education. The program identifies the girls from the slums in Jaipur and channelizes them through a creatively planned curriculum in formal education and vocational training. This organization provides not just schooling and vocational training, but also meals, uniforms, and transport. The enrolment of girls in the school has been rising yearly.
