Location: Gilgit Baltistan (GB), Pakistan
Status: Implemented
Duration: June 2017- September 2020
Project Description:
The project aims to provide quality education to marginalized students in the mountainous regions of Pakistan, particularly focusing on enhancing accessibility for girls. In collaboration with Iqra Fund, WEF sponsors education for 246 girls from Baltistan, covering primary, middle, and secondary school scholarships, including tuition fees, uniforms, stationery, school bags, boarding, academic workshops, and teacher training. These girls, primarily from families with limited income options relying on subsistent farming, receive critical support.
WEF has contributed a total grant of $36,282 since 2017 and an additional $1325.00 grant to sponsor 100 girls for the one-year school period from September 2019 to September 2020. Despite challenging conditions, including difficult terrain, extreme weather, poor infrastructure, and governmental support limitations, WEF’s initiative aims to break the cycle of educational denial in these remote areas. Education, especially for girls, is often considered a luxury, with many villages lacking schools beyond primary or middle levels. The project addresses the crucial need for education in these areas, offering opportunities to continue schooling and overcome the challenges associated with accessing secondary and higher secondary education in bigger towns, including expenses for tuition, boarding, lodging, transport, and other necessities.
